One
to One Support and Therapeutic Group Work
Through One to One support and therapeutic group work BAC-IN
offers support that encourages the overall development of
the service user. The One to One and group support challenges
and addresses issues associated with alcoholism, drug addiction,
co-dependency and other self-destructive behaviours. Part
of the therapeutic group work focuses on service users cultural,
psychological, emotional, religious, spiritual and traditional
aspects of their developmental journeys of self-transformation.
Outreach
Work
BAC-IN carries out regular outreach work within the African-Caribbean,
South Asian and Dual Heritage communities. Part of this involves
promoting the service and creating awareness amongst a range
of community outlets such as temples, mosques, community centres
and local shops as well as other general health authorities.
Peer Mentoring &
Peer Advocacy
Peer mentoring gives BAC-IN service users the opportunity
to share ideas, concerns and issues with their peers, providing
emotional support and guidance to help service users to attain
new goals and to be empowered to act as an agent of change
within their own communities.
Mentoring is about one person helping another to achieve something
in a respectful, non-judgemental and non-exploitative manner.
Mentoring is not about telling the person what to do but rather
how to do something. The aims of mentoring are: to empower,
to build confidence, to help attain goals and to encourage
informed choice.
What is a good mentor?
A mentor is an individual who can help another person to overcome
their limitations and help awaken their inner potential to
become productive people.
A good mentor is like a good teacher who has overcome their
own difficulties, limitations and other self defeating behaviours.
They demonstrate the ability to empathise, motivate and to
empower others and they are consistent in the way they live
their own life, a life of personal growth, ongoing personal
reflection and are spiritually directed.
A
mentor is a person who is responsible, reliable and someone
who can inspire, someone you can look up to as a guide, as
a role model. They lead by good example and they practice
what they teach.
The
qualities of a good mentor are a person who is living a proactive
and fulfilling life, someone who is accomplishing their life
goals. They can demonstrate the ability to communicate with
confidence and are able to cultivate good relationship with
family, colleagues and friends.
Peer Advocacy
Peer advocacy gives BAC-IN service users an opportunity to
have a representative within the service act alongside them
and on their behalf which provides them with support, often
required during such situations. The benefits of this are
to increase the persons sense of power, increase their capacity
of choices and help the person to become more confident, assertive
and independent.
